Richard has written 8 monographs to date, edited or co-edited a further 25 volumes and is the author of over a 100 journal articles and book chapters. His books include Modern Italian Social Theory: Ideology and Politics from Pareto to the Present, Liberalism and Modern Society: An Historical Argument; (with Darrow Schecter) Gramsci and the Italian State; Liberalism and Pluralism: Towards a Politics of Compromise; Rethinking Liberalism; Political Constitutionalism and Citizenship: A Very Short Introduction and, as editor or co-editor, Victorian Liberalism; Constitutionalism in Transformation; Pluralism and Liberal Neutrality; Citizenship and Governance in the EU; Political Concepts; The Cambridge History of Twentieth Century Political Thought; Lineages of European Citizenship; Making European Citizens. He has also edited scholarly editions of works by Beccaria, Bobbio and Gramsci and numerous journal special issues, including most recently on Courts and Representative Democracy, on Representative Democracy in the EU: Does One Come at the Expense of the Other?, and on National Parliaments and the Politicization of European Integration.
His publications have been translated into several languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Czech, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish.
Richard is currently engaged on a study of Political Leadership provisionally titled The Democratic Prince, a book on The Democratic Constitution for Oxford University Press, and a monograph applying republican theory to the EU for Cambridge University Press. A selection of his articles on Croce, Gramsci, Bobbio and the Italian Political Tradition has just been published by ECPR Press.
