Richard has written 8 monographs to date, edited or co-edited a further 25 volumes and is the author of over a 100 journal articles and book chapters.
His books include Modern Italian Social Theory: Ideology and Politics from Pareto to the Present, Liberalism and Modern Society: An Historical Argument; (with Darrow Schecter) Gramsci and the Italian State; Liberalism and Pluralism: Towards a Politics of Compromise; Political Constitutionalismand Citizenship: A Very Short Introduction.
He has edited or co-edited numerous books and journal special issues, including Victorian Liberalism; Constitutionalism in Transformation; Pluralism and Liberal Neutrality; Citizenship and Governance in the EU; Political Concepts; The Cambridge History of Twentieth Century Political Thought; Lineages of European Citizenship; Making European Citizens. He has also edited scholarly editions of works by Beccaria, Bobbio and Gramsci . His most recent co-edited works include Courts and Representative Democracy, Representative Democracy in the EU: Does One Come at the Expense of the Other?, National Parliaments and the Politicization of European Integration, European Boundaries in Question? and Political Theory and the European Union.
His publications have been translated into several languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Czech, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish.
A selection of his articles on liberalism was published by Bloomsbury as Rethinking Liberalism. His articles on Italian political thought have been collected as Croce, Gramsci, Bobbio and the Italian Political Tradition and published by ECPR Press. Under their new imprint with Rowman and Littlefield, ECPR Press are in the process of publishing a volume collecting some of his EU articles, many written with the volume’s co-author Dario Castiglione. The volume is provisionally entitled From Maastricht to Brexit: Democracy, Constitutionalism and Citizenship in the EU. His study of the democratic legitimacy of the EU is forthcoming from Cambridge University Press.
