Finding Aids and Research

The HAEU preserves and makes accessible the archival holdings of the European institutions, as well as private papers of high-ranking EU officials, archives of pro-European movements and other organizations with a European scope.

The fonds of the HAEU are assembled into four separate groups: EU institutions, Corporate Bodies, Individuals and Collections. To start your research you may either browse the inventories of the various fonds, search our database by keyword or consult research guides for specific subject matters.

In addition, it is useful to look at the oral history holdings, which comprise of numerous interviews of European politicians and officials.

The HAEU also includes a Library, which consists of approximately 15.000 volumes on the History of European Integration from the early 1940s, on EC Member States’ external relations and on the Cold War. Consult the catalogue.

Access to records of the HAEU

The archives deposited at the HAEU by EU institutions are open to the public under the 30-years access rule. Concerning private fonds, particular rules may apply to their perusal.
